Antwerp, Jacob Mesens, 1649. Oblong 8vo. Contemporary plain vellum, spine with - remarkable enough - the words "Emblem. Marcus Gerards" in contemporary handwriting! With 55 etched plates, numbered (1), 2-55. The first one (123 x 91 mm) is apparently the title of the original Latin edition with the engraved words 'Apologi creaturarum', the title of that edition: a woman comes out a cave approaching Mercure; in a banderole underneath is written 'Utilia prudenti inprudenti futilia'; as the book is in oblong 8vo, this is the only plate which is printed on its side, the other ones measuring ca. 74 x 116 mm. 56 lvs, the versos with the printed texts numbered 1-56 and the rectos with the plates numbered (I), 1-55.
