Beautifully bound in nineteenth-century blue morocco, richly gilt with fillets, rolls and leafy branches on both sides, spine gilt in compartments with title lettered in gold, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e.; the binding is signed by LORTIC FRERES. All pages, including the title-page within an elaborate woodcut border: there are eight different designs with changing medallions in the lower border; one of the medallions with the coat-of-arms of Jan van der Noot with the motto 'Van der Noot een deucht'; three with other mottos of Van der Noot: 'Amor et prudentia', 'Labore et industria', and 'Tempora te tempori' (see: Poorteman & Waterschoot (eds.), Jan van der Noot, Verscheiden poetixe wercken (Keulen 1972), Het voorwerk (1990), p. 62), and one with a portrait of a poeta laureata. A large coat-of-arms of Jan van der Noot on the verso of the title (and on the recto of the last leaf, verso blank); woodcut portrait of Jan van der Noot when he was thirty years old with the poem: "So war bey seinen dreissig Jar/ Von der Noot mit Aug, Bart und Haar/ Aber sein kunst, tügt und wezen/ Kan man auss seim büchlein lesen", and 20 full-page emblematical woodcuts (ca. 92 x 75 mm) after the engravings by Marcus Gheeraerts for the London edition of 1568 of the Theatre.
